Austrian Library Association (BVÖ)

The Austrian Library Association (BVÖ) is an umbrella organisation representing the interests of Austrian Public Libraries. More than 2,800 libraries are members of the association. We provide them with service, advice and information. Our services range from financial support to the promotion of literature and reading, publications and cost-free online content.

We carry out the operative tasks of the Advisory Council on Education and Training, the organisation responsible for BKA-financed basic and advanced professional training for librarians working at public libraries.

The Austrian Library Association was founded 1948, at that time under the name “Association of Austrian People’s Libraries and People’s Librarians”. The two associations which had existed previously – “Österreichisches Borromäuswerk“ (the umbrella organisation of all libraries of the Catholic Church, today called “Österreichisches Bibliothekswerk“) and the “Verlag des ÖGB-Büchereiservice“ (the umbrella organisation of the libraries of Austrian Chamber of Labour and workers’ libraries) - cooperatively joined the new association.Read More...
